Atteris is a specialist engineering consultancy where technical expertise is central to the business. As the organisation grew, so did the importance of investing in the leadership capability and relationships that support strong performance.

STORY

Building the human side of a technical business

As an engineering business, Atteris’ work is highly technical and detail-driven, built to solve complex problems for organisations across the energy and infrastructure sectors.

Like any growing organisation, Atteris’ success depends on more than technical expertise. The quality of their work is shaped by the people behind it: the leaders making decisions, the teams solving problems together and the relationships that allow good work to happen. For founder Eric xxx, that human side of business became increasingly important as Atteris grew.

“When I started, I didn’t have anyone,” Eric recalls. “You can become quite isolated as a business owner.”

Erik, Founder

Over time, he recognised the value of having someone from outside the business who could provide perspective, challenge his thinking and act as an objective sounding board.

Our relationship with Atteris began as leadership development and coaching more than a decade ago and has continued as the business and its needs have evolved.

Even the best teams need a coach

Eric’s first experience with Oasis came through a management program while he was General Manager. What stood out for him wasn’t just the content, but the way the conversations created space for reflection. He and Oasis founding director Clint Vawser struck up a connection, and the work shifted into ongoing coaching support for Eric, the senior leadership team and, over time, emerging leaders across the business.

For Eric, the ongoing value comes from having someone who can see the business from the outside.

“Your partner or people close to you are emotionally attached to the business, but they’re not in the day-to-day. You need someone external who has the experience and objectivity to have those conversations.”

For Eric, coaching isn’t a luxury reserved for businesses with problems, but an essential part of building a strong organisation. He describes Clint’s impact as coach through a sporting analogy:

“Why would you play a football game without a coach? Players make things happen and score goals, but you still need someone watching the game objectively and helping you improve.”

Creating a shared way of leading

Over the years, Oasis has also supported Atteris through emerging leader development programs and facilitated conversations around complex business challenges. Beyond our work with leaders, these programs have helped to create a shared language and approach across the organisation.

Senior team members have participated in leadership programs including LeaderNET and Leader as Coach, while ongoing coaching conversations continue to reinforce the principles in everyday work.

“I see the impact with our upcoming future leaders. We’re starting to use the same language and principles. We’re all coming at things from a place of higher understanding.”

For Eric, one of the biggest benefits is seeing people recognise their own capacity to grow.

“It gives people extra motivation to stay with the business. They see that we’re investing time and money into their development, and they’re learning something and applying it directly to their work.”

Bringing the human factor to engineering

Atteris’ work may be built around engineering, but Eric believes organisations cannot overlook the human element.

“Our business is all about engineering, but Oasis brings in the human factor. We’re not machines. We’re humans doing technical work.”

That means understanding how people communicate, how they respond under pressure and how leaders create environments where others can do their best work.Because even in highly technical organisations, performance ultimately comes down to people.

The long-term difference

After more than 10 years working together, Eric still believes in the value of Oasis’ work as an ongoing investment.

“People want to grow and develop in life, that’s what I see. We’re nurturing that growth mindset.”

For organisations considering leadership support, his advice is simple: don’t wait until challenges become problems.

“Once your business grows beyond a certain size, having that external perspective is essential. It’s not a luxury. If you don’t do it, ultimately, you’re going to run into problems.”
