Prendiville Group is a diverse hospitality, tourism and entertainment business, with General Managers leading individual venues and businesses across its portfolio. As the business emerged from COVID, it recognised the need to reset its approach to leadership, creating a shared understanding of what good leadership looks like while engaging and developing the next generation of leaders across the group.

STORY

Putting leadership front and centre

For Prendiville, the starting point was simple: leadership sits at the heart of everything else.

“If you can't get leadership right, forget about cost control and revenue generation.”

Garrett Prendiville, CEO, Garrett Hospitality Regional Hotels

A statement that is particularly true in a business where General Managers have significant autonomy, leading individual venues and teams with the support of shared services and specialist expertise from across the group. Strong, capable leaders are essential to the success of each business.

"We needed to define what leadership looked like, focus on it and give our leaders frameworks and structure."

The initial focus was on senior leaders and GMs, giving them the space to step back from day-to-day demands and think about how they lead and work with others. Then, the work expanded to include emerging talent, aspiring GMs and heads of department, helping Prendiville develop its current leaders while also preparing the next generation.

From individual awareness to stronger teams

A key part of this has been the Enneagram, which has helped people better understand their own strengths and blind spots, as well as the different personalities, motivations and behaviours within their teams.

That awareness has been powerful in helping people understand why others may approach things differently, find better ways to navigate interpersonal conflict and use the strengths of those around them to create stronger teams.

For the business, this represents a broader shift in organisational maturity: people have greater awareness of themselves and each other, and leaders have more tools to create productive working environments.

“One of the outcomes is a material drop in interpersonal conflict. We’ve seen tenure increase and staff satisfaction levels improve."

A shared language

For Prendiville, investing in its people is not only about improving workplace performance. The organisation values the fact that the impact can extend beyond the traditional boundaries of work.

Employees can take greater self-awareness, better communication skills and a deeper understanding of other people into their lives more broadly.

This has become an important part of how Prendiville thinks about its investment in people. Staff have regularly approached leadership to talk about their experiences with Oasis and the impact the work has had on them.

“Every single time, the people who thought they didn't have time for it come out of their first coaching session thinking differently.”

The value of an external perspective

Prendiville sees Oasis as bringing a combination of expertise, calmness and practical insight. The team's measured, considered approach creating an environment where people feel confident in what they are learning, and that they have practical ideas to bring back into the organisation.

“There are many lightbulb moments. You go away feeling like there is something tangible you can introduce into your organisation and professionally yourself, to change the game.”

For Prendiville, that is the real value of the work: creating greater awareness, stronger collaboration and a more capable leadership group.

What began as a response to a period of organisational change is now an established part of how The Prendiville Group develops its people.

"This has become entrenched in our organisation, and it is something we will continue investing in."
